2019 gargantua Syrah California
gargantua Syrah
gargantua Syrah celebrates Syrah's rich heritage and the diversity of expression possible on the West Coast of the United States. Led by Josh Bergström's unwavering belief that American West Coast Syrah is unique, delicious, and belongs in the same conversation as the wines from France’s Northern Rhône Valley and other hallowed terroirs. To honor the purity of the Syrah fruit sourced from the best sites, we employ whole-cluster fermentation and neutral oak aging, allowing their unique character to shine through with finesse and complexity. Winemaker Notes
Updated February 2024
Inky black cherry in color, this Syrah is powerfully wound up like a coil with aromas of tobacco, tar, blackberry, black currant, savory dried herbs, bresaola, peppered meats, and Greek black olive. This wine unfurls and expands in the glass by the minute with oxygen exposure to peel back its layers of structure and secrets. Subtle poblano spice, dried oregano, kalamata, ripe dark fruits, pipe smoke, French-roast coffee, and baker's chocolate begin to emerge. In the mouth, this is a fantastic, herculean Syrah with folded textural complexity and fine but copious tannins that support a dark-fruited beauty of a wine that demands a pairing of char-grilled red meats or the pinnacle of all culinary endeavors: Pizza.
