Silice: A Bergström Wines Estate
Planted 2001 * Chehalem Mountains AVA * Elevation: 400ft
The French word for “Silica,” the shiny quartz in sand, Silice has the deepest sandy soils of any of our estate vineyards. This 20-acre vineyard sprawls over four different rolling sandy hillsides in the Chehalem Mountains AVA and most probably is a 60 million-year-old sand dune or beach. Silice sees all-day, unrelenting sun exposure, and strong winds that give the Pinot Noirs spicy powerful notes of gingerbread, cola and sassafras, with a mild savory and pretty floral lift while Silice Chardonnay is textural, bright, and delicate with a citrusy floral bouquet. Josh Bergström's Notes
White gold with a youthful green, chlorophyll tint. Enticingly sweet aromatics of hazelnut, marzipan, and spice cake framed by great flinty, stony minerality as well as elegant, smoky barrel toast and a wonderful floral expression. Aromatically, the 2019 Silice is hard to resist in its youth. The palate is driven by succulent and juicy citrus fruits like lemon and tangerine as well as green and yellow apples. The spicy and sweet aromatic potpourri echoes on the long, textural, and satisfying finish. Though hard to resist now, this Chardonnay has a long life ahead of it and deserves time in a cellar. Only 3 barrels produced. Drink 2021 – 2030+. Alcohol: 13%
